In the XIXth century, under the influence of Tornow in particular, the restoration of the south portal was begun with the construction of a Gothic portal as a replacement of that of Blondel.
In the XXth century, the transformations provide finally the cathedral of this quite particular luminosity which returns this so singular building and which will be at the origin of its nickname of " lantern of the Good God ".
The cathedral Saint-Etienne, "Lantern of the Good God" is one of more beautiful monuments of Europe. She questions by her immense glazed surface and calls out by her height. Renewed at the beginning of the century by Tornow who restored its Gothic soul by replacing neo-classic elements, and cleaned in 1995 and 2012, the cathedral Saint Etienne is a jewel of the Gothic art.
The most striking elements of the cathedral are the tracks of the first constructions ( 1220-1522 ). The architect Blondel made his contribution by the registration of the portal connected by detached houses with the arches of the Place d’Armes.

The cathedral Saint-Etienne of Metz is the monument the most visited by the city. Numerous foreigners stop to visit this prestigious building, among the vastest and the highest of France, which never leaves unmoved.It is classified in the inventory of historic monuments. For several years, the State, which has in responsibility the maintenance of the building, dedicates important budgets to realize the outside and internal renovation.
The cathedral of Metz became, over time, the natural place of all the big gatherings of the city or the diocese. October 10th, 1988, the religious building received the historical visits of Jean Paul II.
As such and in memory of this event, the nearby place of the building became the place “Jean Paul II”. It was inaugurated on December 17th, 2006, the same day as the Choir renewed by the cathedral.
