Those two « places » are two downtown squares well known by people for their restaurants and cafés where most people meet to have a drink or lunch/dinner sitting outside when the weather allows it. Even though the architecture of both cities are really different, Thionville and Metz both have a similar place that everyone living in the region have ever heard of. 

For the special events like the 14th of July (Our 4th of July) or “la fête de la musique” (a music celebration), those places are overwhelmed with people of any ages. Sometimes it is even hard to walk; that is how crowded those places get.

It might not be the most beautiful and interesting place to visit when you want to discover France but you cannot go around it, you will walk past it and most likely stop to have a bite to eat or a drink.
